60 years later, his words inspire a new generation

Inspiration that echoes today

Reverberating since09.12.62
On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy challenged America to see landing on the Moon as something bigger than space travel. It was the idea that achieving the impossible should be applied to all challenges that face us—especially those back here on Earth. Today, a new generation hears his call to choose a better future for all.
“But why, some say, the Moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask, why climb the highest mountain? We choose to go to the Moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win.”

To accomplish the goals set out in President Kennedy’s Moonshot speech, a societal shift was needed, to say nothing of the numerous technologies that weren’t invented yet. But he knew what the nation could do, and he asked that of us. President Kennedy called for action, and the nation answered. That passion for change continues today.

"There is no strife, no prejudice, no national conflict in outer space as yet."

But why, some say, the Moon?

John F. Kennedy served as president of the United States from 1961 until his death in 1963.

President Kennedy inspired a generation to accept responsibility for its future by taking political and social action. As president, he worked to ensure equal rights and opportunities for all Americans. He encouraged Americans to lift those less fortunate than themselves. He challenged the nation to reach for the impossible and land a man on the moon before the end of the decade. And he reduced the threat of nuclear war by finding a peaceful resolution to the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Throughout his term, President Kennedy pushed for progress in education, space exploration and innovation, the environment, and the pursuit of peace.
